The Expedited Specialist Pathway: Your Fast Track to Practising in Australia

Are you a General Practitioner in the UK, Ireland, or New Zealand looking for a sunnier lifestyle and a rewarding career move? Australia is actively welcoming experienced overseas GPs through the Expedited Specialist Pathway (SIMG), a streamlined route designed to get you practicing in Australia sooner than ever before.

At DNA Healthcare Recruitment, we specialise in turning that dream into a reality. We provide end-to-end support, guiding you through every step, from your initial application to your first day in an Australian practice.

Do I Qualify? Check Your Eligibility

This pathway is designed for Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) who hold specific qualifications. If your credentials match one of the options below, you're likely eligible to apply.

United Kingdom Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) AND a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) Awarded from 2007 onwards
Ireland Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) AND a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCT) Awarded from 2009 onwards
New Zealand Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP) Awarded from 2012 onwards

Important: Your qualification must also appear on the Medical Board of Australia's official accepted qualifications list.

Your Step-by-Step Application Checklist

The new pathway reduces regulatory barriers and eliminates the need for individual college assessments before registration. Here is how the process works:

Step 1

Step 1: Primary Source Verification (PSV)

  • Apply to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for primary source verification of your primary medical degree and specialist GP qualification.
  • This is done through the ECFMG’s EPIC / MyIntealth service.
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6

What Happens When You Arrive?

Once your specialist registration is granted and your supervised practice plan is approved, you can start practicing.

To transition to unconditional registration, you will need to complete a six-month period of supervised practice, which includes:

‎Orientation

An orientation to the Australian health system.
‎ ‎

‎Education

Mandatory cultural safety education.
‎ ‎

‎Report

Submission of a supervised practice report after three months.

‎Assessments

Completion of required workplace-based assessments.

At the end of the six months, you submit your final reports and apply to the Medical Board to have the conditions removed from your registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

The traditional pathway requires a lengthy individual assessment by the specialist college (RACGP or ACRRM) before you can even apply for registration. This expedited route allows for "upfront" registration, meaning you bypass that initial college wait time and get to Australia months sooner.

Yes, absolutely. The Expedited Specialist Pathway leads to specialist registration, which supports a skilled migration visa application. This usually allows you to include immediate family members (spouse and dependent children) in your visa application, granting them work and study rights in Australia. We can provide guidance on this or connect you with our trusted migration partners.

No. The primary benefit of the Expedited Specialist Pathway is that it recognises your existing UK, Irish, or NZ qualification as substantially comparable. You do not need to sit for the RACGP fellowship exams to gain specialist registration and work as a GP.

However, if you wish to hold dual fellowship or meet specific employer requirements, you can choose to apply to the college and work towards fellowship while you practice, but it is not a requirement to start work.

If your qualification was awarded prior to these cut-off dates, you may not be eligible for this specific pathway. However, you may still be eligible for other specialist registration pathways (such as the standard specialist pathway which involves a college assessment). Contact DNA Healthcare Recruitment to discuss your specific situationwe can help explore all available options.

For your first six months, you’ll work alongside a Board-approved supervisor. This isn’t a "traineeship"it’s a period of professional support designed to help you navigate the nuances of the Australian health system, Medicare, and cultural safety.

Yes, to a certain extent. You will need to secure an approved GP position and a nominated supervisor, which will determine your principal place of practice. With our extensive network across all states and territories, DNA Healthcare Recruitment can help you find a position that matches your lifestyle preferences—whether that's a busy city practice in Sydney or Melbourne, or a rural or regional location with higher incentives.

Yes, there are application fees payable to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for Primary Source Verification, and to the Medical Board of Australia for your registration application. There are also costs associated with the EPIC/MyIntealth account. DNA Healthcare Recruitment provides our expert guidance and support as part of our recruitment service—speak to us about how we can support you through the process.
