Locum at Young Hospital, NSW

About Young Hospital

There's a version of rural medicine that burns doctors out and a version that reminds them why they chose the career. Young is the second kind.

You'll work across a genuine 26-bed district hospital with a 24-hour ED, maternity services, day surgery and oncology. The clinical variety is real - trauma, acute medical cases, obstetric emergencies, mental health, retrievals. But what sets Young apart is the support sitting behind you. A GP Anaesthetist, GP Surgeon and GP Obstetrician are all on-call, escalation pathways are clear, and a 24/7 Patient Flow Unit handles retrievals. You're making independent clinical decisions without ever feeling abandoned.

The shift structure protects you too. ED shifts are clean 12-hour blocks with no on-call obligation. Ward shifts include overnight cover but you're third in line for ED - in practice, your nights are yours.

The nursing team is experienced and confident. The Facility Manager is present and approachable. Locums come back here by choice - which tells you more about a place than any job description could.

Outside the hospital, you're in the middle of NSW wine country, two hours from Canberra and Wagga Wagga, in a town that actually has something to offer.

Key facts about Young Health Service

 Hours and On-call

ED Shifts:

  • 0700–1900 (Day) or 1900–0700 (Night)
  • 12-hour shifts
  • No on-call requirement
  • You're the CMO managing all ED presentations for your shift

Ward Shifts:

  • 0800–1800 Ward MO (active hours)
  • 1800–0800 on-call overnight
  • 3rd on-call for ED overnight (rarely called)

On-Call Support:

  • GP Anaesthetist on-call for airway management and resuscitation
  • GP Surgeon on-call for surgical and obstetric emergencies
  • GP Obstetrician on-call for maternity presentations
  • 24/7 Patient Flow Unit coordinating transfers and retrievals

The Reality: ED shifts are clean 12-hour blocks with no overnight obligation. Ward shifts include overnight on-call but you're third in line for ED – meaning you're genuinely protected unless something significant happens. The procedural GP backup means you're not managing complex surgical or obstetric emergencies alone.

Why work at Young Hospital

Real Procedural Backup You're not the only safety net. A GP Anaesthetist, GP Surgeon and GP Obstetrician are all on-call around the clock. When something complex walks through the door, you've got experienced procedural support behind you. That's not the case at most rural placements.

Genuine Clinical Variety ED shifts cover trauma, acute medical cases, mental health, maternity emergencies and retrieval coordination. Ward shifts mean admissions, inpatient reviews and discharge planning. You're using the full breadth of your skills across both roles - not pigeonholed into one type of medicine.

Clean Shift Structure ED shifts are straightforward 12-hour blocks with zero on-call obligation. Ward shifts include overnight on-call but you're third in line for ED - meaning your sleep is genuinely protected unless something significant happens.

A Team That Functions The nursing team is experienced and confident. The Facility Manager is on site and approachable. Locums are welcomed and quickly integrated - you won't spend your first week figuring out who to call or where things are.

Supported Independent Practice The pace allows you to make your own clinical decisions without feeling abandoned. Clear escalation pathways, on-site pharmacy, allied health, medical imaging and pathology all available. Everything you need to practise properly.

Strong Rural Generalist Exposure Retrieval coordination, procedural GP collaboration, deteriorating patient management - if you're building rural generalist skills or want to maintain them, Young gives you genuine exposure across multiple domains.

Location That Works Two hours from Canberra and Wagga Wagga. Wine region, walking trails, local markets, affordable living. You can have a proper life outside work - not just survive your placement.

Impact on local community:

Young serves a regional agricultural community and the surrounding rural towns that depend on it for healthcare. For many locals, this is the closest hospital they have.

The 24-hour ED, maternity unit, oncology services and aged care mean people can access meaningful healthcare without leaving their community. Births, emergencies, cancer treatment, end of life care - it all happens here, close to family and home.

When something serious happens on a farm or in a remote town nearby, Young is where they come. Your decisions matter to real people with no other options close by.

Genuine and unfiltered review: I am a Registered Nurse and have worked with multiple agencies. However, I have never felt as amazed as I do with the contract I am currently on with DNA Nursing Agency. Both Aruna and Sophie are wonderful. Since my first day with the agency, Aruna has consistently checked in to make sure I am doing well and addressed any issues I might have. No matter if it’s the weekend, she always answers my calls and happily resolves any concerns.

If you are thinking about commencing a travel nurse journey, then I can highly recommend Lucy and the Team at DNA. I had tried on and off for almost 12mths and then it was Lucy who was able to secure my role in Tasmania.

The knowledge from the outset and the assistant along the way has been incredible. Nothing is too much trouble and the team are only ever a phone call/email away

I have been with DNA Recruitment for almost a year now and my agent Ciara has been nothing but helpful along the way. She made the initial move to Australia less daunting and has always been there ready and willing to answer any of my questions. She’s locked in every nursing contract I have wanted, has taken the stress away and honestly has made my life so much easier. Thank you Ciara for being so amazing!
