Locum at Clare Hospital, SA

About Clare Hospital, SA

"It's not the volume that defines this role — it's the level of responsibility."

That's how the site describes it, and it's the most honest thing you can say about Clare. Roughly 3,000 ED presentations a year works out to around eight patients a day on average. That's not what this role is about.

What it's about is being the doctor. The one making decisions. The one managing the ward, covering the ED, and staying across a 24-bed regional facility without a junior doctor alongside you. There's overnight RMC support available from 19:00 to 07:00, and an experienced nursing team who know what they're doing — but you remain the primary clinician on site.

If that sounds like the kind of medicine you're looking for, Clare is a well-supported, well-resourced rural facility in one of South Australia's most liveable regions. It pays well. The team is solid. And there's a decent glass of Riesling waiting at the end of a shift.

Why work at Clare MPHS

Clinical Autonomy Without Isolation You're the primary doctor on site — which means real clinical independence, real decision-making, and real responsibility. There's no junior to hand off to, no committee to defer to. But you're not out on a limb either. An experienced nursing team has your back during the day, and RMC overnight support from 19:00 means you always have someone to call if you need it.

A Manageable Pace of Medicine Around 3,000 ED presentations a year averages out to roughly eight patients a day. That's not what defines this role, but it does tell you something about the pace. This is not frantic metro ED medicine. There's space to actually think through your cases, manage your inpatients properly, and practise the kind of medicine that doesn't burn you out by Thursday.

True Rural Generalist Scope ED cover, inpatient ward management, stabilisation and transfer — the full picture. You're not a specialist and you're not pretending to be. You're a confident rural generalist doing what rural generalists do: broad scope, sound judgement, and knowing when to escalate. Clare gives you exactly that environment.

A Team That Functions Small rural teams either work or they don't. Clare works. The nursing team is experienced, proactive, and genuinely hands-on. They're used to working with visiting doctors and they know how to support without overreaching. Doctors are trusted here, and that trust goes both ways.

The Clare Valley on Your Doorstep Wineries, cellar doors, cycling trails, and a relaxed regional lifestyle — all within 1.5–2 hours of Adelaide. It's a genuinely pleasant place to be based, and that's not nothing when you're weighing up a placement.

Genuine and unfiltered review: I am a Registered Nurse and have worked with multiple agencies. However, I have never felt as amazed as I do with the contract I am currently on with DNA Nursing Agency. Both Aruna and Sophie are wonderful. Since my first day with the agency, Aruna has consistently checked in to make sure I am doing well and addressed any issues I might have. No matter if it’s the weekend, she always answers my calls and happily resolves any concerns.

If you are thinking about commencing a travel nurse journey, then I can highly recommend Lucy and the Team at DNA. I had tried on and off for almost 12mths and then it was Lucy who was able to secure my role in Tasmania.

The knowledge from the outset and the assistant along the way has been incredible. Nothing is too much trouble and the team are only ever a phone call/email away

I have been with DNA Recruitment for almost a year now and my agent Ciara has been nothing but helpful along the way. She made the initial move to Australia less daunting and has always been there ready and willing to answer any of my questions. She’s locked in every nursing contract I have wanted, has taken the stress away and honestly has made my life so much easier. Thank you Ciara for being so amazing!

Beverley is the best agent for me – she responds efficiently, goes above and beyond in finding me the most suitable shifts, checks up on me to make sure I’m okay almost daily and you can tell she genuinely wants the best for you. Thank you so much, Beverley, for making everything so smooth for me!
