Locum at Blackall Hospital, QLD

About Blackall Hospital

"Bring your gum boots rather than your high heels"

If you're looking for autonomy, clinical diversity, and genuine rural medicine where you can make a real difference, Blackall might be your perfect fit. But as the Acting Director of Nursing puts it: this isn't a place for high heels – metaphorical or otherwise.

The hospital is only 5 years old, so in public health terms it still has that new car smell. But more importantly, it has something you can't build: a culture that values the doctors who show up ready to work.

You'll deal with complex cases, late presenters, and everything in between. You'll provide outreach to remote Primary Health Centres. You'll have autonomy, but you'll also have the support of an experienced nursing team when you need it. The town has the highest regard for their doctors, and the doctors who work here keep coming back – which tells you everything you need to know.

This is rewarding work, not easy work. If you're tired of transactional medicine and want to practice medicine the way it should be practiced, Blackall is waiting. Just don't walk in expecting it to be handed to you on a silver platter.

As they say: it's what you make of it.

Why work at Blackall

For the right doctor, Blackall offers everything you're looking for:

Genuine Rural Medicine This is rural medicine the way it should be practiced. You'll have real autonomy, manage diverse presentations, and deal with cases that would be referred out in larger centres. From stabilising Category 1s for RFDS transfer to managing complex patients who've never engaged with their health, you'll use the full breadth of your clinical skills.

Modern Facilities, Supportive Team The hospital is only 5 years old, so you're working in contemporary facilities with the equipment you need. More importantly, you'll be supported by an experienced nursing team with a strong culture. The nurse unit manager and clinical facilitator ensure junior nurses are well-supported, and the doctors who work here regularly speak highly of the team.

Manageable On-Call First on call once or twice weekly – genuinely manageable. You'll supervise PHOs on rural generalist rotations, and when things get complex, RFDS is a regular presence.

Clinical Variety Your week might include ED shifts, GP clinic sessions, and outreach to remote Primary Health Centres. Patient presentations range from 5 to 20 per day depending on the time of year, keeping things interesting without being overwhelming.

Doctors Keep Coming Back The best indicator of a good workplace? Doctors return. Blackall has regulars on rotation, and new doctors consistently say they'll be back. There's no shortage of rural work available – when doctors choose to return here, it speaks volumes.

Community Connection The town holds their doctors in high regard. You're not just another locum passing through – you're a valued member of the community.

The Bottom Line If you value autonomy over protocols, diversity over routine, and making a genuine difference over transactional medicine, Blackall is worth a serious look

The doctors who work here regularly are described as "very good," and tellingly, they keep coming back. Recently, a new doctor finished her first rotation and immediately said she'd return. The town holds their doctors in the highest regard, and if you value genuine teamwork and mutual respect, you'll fit right in.

Things to see & do in Blackall:

Let's be honest: Blackall is a town of around 1,400 people on the banks of the Barcoo River, 960km west of Brisbane. It's not a resort destination, but it's got character and the essentials you need.

The Basics: You've got an IGA supermarket, Schluters Bakery, a few cafes including The Lodge on Hawthorn (historic Masonic temple with coffee shop and antique store), The Drawing Board, and Big Red Souvenir Shop & Cafe. For meals, there's The Woolshed Baa and Grill, the Barcoo Hotel, and the Union Hotel – proper outback pubs with decent food and cold beer. It's not fine dining, but it's genuine country hospitality.

What Makes Blackall Worth Visiting:

  • The Historic Woolscour – Australia's last steam-operated wool washing plant (1908-1978). It's genuinely fascinating industrial heritage, with guided tours running hourly from 9am-4pm and the steam machinery operational May-August.
  • The Blackall Aquatic Centre – Natural artesian spa waters at 36-40 degrees. After a long shift, this is perfect for unwinding. There's also a pool and massage spa.
  • "Beyond the Black Stump" – The actual black stump that gave rise to the famous Aussie saying is here, used as a survey marker in the 1880s.
  • Sculpture Trail – Nine sculptures scattered around town earning Blackall its reputation as the "Arts Capital of the West." From recycled railway bridge material to bronze statues of Jackie Howe (the legendary shearer who hand-shore 321 sheep in 7 hours 40 minutes in 1892).
  • Idalia National Park – About 113km southwest, with mulga woodland, rocky escarpments, and bushwalking if you fancy a day trip.

The Reality: You're not going to find boutique shopping or buzzing nightlife. But you'll find genuine country character, stunning night skies, friendly locals, and the kind of authentic outback experience you can't manufacture. If you value peace and quiet over entertainment options, and prefer a cold beer at the pub over cocktail bars, Blackall delivers exactly what it promises.

Beverley is the best agent for me – she responds efficiently, goes above and beyond in finding me the most suitable shifts, checks up on me to make sure I’m okay almost daily and you can tell she genuinely wants the best for you. Thank you so much, Beverley, for making everything so smooth for me!

I couldn’t recommend Bev the team at DNA Recruitment more highly.

Having been away from hospital practice for 2 years, I was a little nervous stepping back into acute medicine. The team were very understanding and supportive and found a well-paid locum job in a very welcoming team in a Regional Hospital. There was always good communication, arranging all the paperwork and constantly checking in to see how the job was going, and the accounts team were very happy to work with my requests to enable sacrifice of pay to increase Super contribution.

A great experience. I would recommend to any who are looking to engage in locum practice to contact DNA Recruit.

Bev was recommended to me by another doctor, and I can see why. From our very first contact, she has been warm, encouraging, and extremely helpful. I’ve had some difficult personal circumstances, which I was afraid would affect my ability to work. Bev has gone above and beyond to find me work, and been incredibly supportive throughout the process.

I’ve worked with several locum agencies in the past, and most of them just do the bare minimum (which I don’t begrudge). But Bev has been an absolute joy to have as my agent, and I’ve already referred another colleague to her. Even Veronika in payroll has been very helpful, friendly, and accommodating. I haven’t worked with anyone else in DNA Recruit, but so far I have only good things to say about them.

Thank you Bey you’re adorable. I’m sure you appreciate how competitive the recruitment market is and it’s no secret i have dealt with several agencies (who often advertise the same opportunities) – but one by one shed them in favour of you because in addition to being so damn professional you have a genuine bedside manner which helps to make the tedious process of organising things trip after trip that bit easier – a fact which has not gone unnoticed, and I am grateful for.

DNA Medical Recruitment provide a warm, caring service to Doctors, and they are an absolute pleasure to deal with. Bev is my consultant, and I could not ask any more of her. She is always ready to help, nothing is an issue and she bends over backwards to ensure that I am moving to a position that suits me. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending DNA to any of our colleagues, whether it be nursing or medical. Thank you Bev for all that you do.

I have worked with David over the last year and he is professional, reliable and always keeps me up to date with work matters. David also responds to emails and phone calls promptly which assists me with managing my work schedules. There were occasions in which David had to chase the primary employer for clarification few hours be for my shift, and David has come through with the necessary clarification. I would highly recommend David’s leadership and honesty when it comes to managing your locum placement.
