{"id":16877,"date":"2025-11-26T06:19:39","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T06:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dnamedicalrecruitment.com.au\/?p=16877"},"modified":"2025-11-26T06:19:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T06:19:39","slug":"how-to-promote-work-life-balance-for-general-practitioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dnamedicalrecruitment.com.au\/how-to-promote-work-life-balance-for-general-practitioners\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Promote Work\u2013Life Balance for General Practitioners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I\u2019m speaking with GPs, whether they\u2019re exploring a permanent move or considering their next locum contract, one theme comes up in almost every conversation: work\u2013life balance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For some, it\u2019s a question of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what even is work-life balance in<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a modern GP setting where patient demand is high and admin never seems to end. For others, it\u2019s about protecting time for family, travel or further study without feeling guilty for stepping away from the consulting room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From my perspective as someone who is on the phone with hundred of GPs every week, balance isn\u2019t a nice-to-have. It\u2019s one of the biggest drivers of job satisfaction and a major factor in whether a GP stays in a clinic long-term or starts looking elsewhere.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> \u200e \u200e\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What work\u2013life balance really means for GPs<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For most GPs I work with, balance comes down to three things:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Control over their schedule \u2013 having a say in the days they work, whether they do after-hours and how their sessions are structured.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Manageable workloads \u2013 enough time to give proper care without constantly running behind or taking admin home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Space to recharge \u2013 time for family, hobbies or further study so medicine doesn\u2019t become their entire identity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Locum GPs often choose that path specifically for flexibility. They might work two weeks on, two weeks off, or build contracts around travel plans or study blocks. They avoid some of the long-term administrative burden and can pick environments that suit their lifestyle.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Permanent GPs, on the other hand, tend to be looking for predictable hours, supportive teams and room for growth \u2013 things like protected time to complete an advanced skin certificate, or the ability to finish in time for school pick-up a couple of days a week.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u200e \u200e \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why balance is now front and centre<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Work\u2013life balance has always mattered, but the conversations I\u2019m having now are very different to even a few years ago.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Early-career GPs are far less willing to compromise on lifestyle. At DNA we are seeing them test different environments, use locum work to figure out what they enjoy and walk away from a clinic that doesn\u2019t align with their values.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">More experienced GPs are also reassessing. Many have done the long days, the after-hours and the weekends. Now they want to support personal wellbeing in the workplace and protect time with their families, sometimes shifting into locum roles or reducing their hours to make that possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across the board, expectations are changing. Money still matters, of course, but it\u2019s rarely the only deciding factor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The pressures that make balance harder<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">General practice is uniquely demanding. GPs are now juggling:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">High patient volumes<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Increasingly complex care needs<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rising administrative requirements<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These pressures can build gradually until they hit burnout. Locums avoid some of the long-term load but face their own challenges\u2026 constantly adapting to new systems, walking into understaffed clinics, and needing to get up to speed quickly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both groups need structures around them that deliberately protect their wellbeing, not just vague promises of a \u201csupportive culture\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> \u200e \u200e\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Practical ways I am seeing clinics support GP wellbeing<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The clinics I see doing this well aren\u2019t necessarily the ones with the flashiest fit-outs. They\u2019re the ones making practical, visible changes, such as:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shorter consulting blocks or no after-hours for GPs who want that structure<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dedicated admin time blocked into the diary so notes and results don\u2019t spill into personal time<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clear, well-organised onboarding so locums aren\u2019t losing the first two days to logins and confusion<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mental health support \u2013 formal EAP access or informal check-ins that are actually followed up<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CPD funding and on-the-job learning so GPs can grow their skills during work time<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Real autonomy in clinical decisions, even within corporate environments<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For locums, simple things like being treated as part of the team, having access to resources, and being paid promptly make a big difference. Recognition and respect go a long way in both permanent and locum settings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u200e \u200e \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How I match GPs with roles that fit their lives<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I\u2019m mapping the market or taking on a new brief, I don\u2019t just ask about billings and hours. I\u2019ll ask clinics:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What does flexibility really look like here?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do you induct a new GP?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What kind of team support do you offer day to day?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then, when I\u2019m speaking with GPs, I\u2019ll dig into their version of balance:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Is it fewer days? No weekends?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A particular type of patient mix or clinic style?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Proximity to home or schools?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Space to complete further study?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From there, it\u2019s about matching lifestyle as much as skillset, especially for locums, where we can line up contracts around travel plans, family commitments or training blocks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Behind the scenes, our weekly payroll gives clinics the choice: pay locums directly, or have us handle it so doctors know they\u2019ll be paid on time, every time. It seems like a small detail, but it\u2019s a big signal that their time and effort are respected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u200e \u200e \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A real example of balance in action<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently, we placed a GP in a clinic in regional WA. She had multiple offers on the table but chose the one that allowed her to work three days a week, with no after-hours and a very supportive admin team.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That structure meant she could:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spend more time with her young family<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keep her commute short and manageable<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Continue an advanced skin certificate with hands-on support in the clinic<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the practice, it wasn\u2019t their original ideal of a five-day GP, but by being flexible, they gained a committed doctor who is building a specialist caseload and has every reason to stay.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> \u200e \u200e\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Advice for practices that want to stand out<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re trying to attract and retain GPs in a competitive market, my advice is simple:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be proactive and genuine. Don\u2019t wait for GPs to ask about culture and balance \u2013 talk about it upfront.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be honest, warts and all. If you can\u2019t offer certain perks, be clear about what you can offer in return.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Listen early, not when it\u2019s too late.
