Flights: Return flights are provided, making it straightforward to get to and from Blackall for your rotations.
Things to see & do in Blackall:
Let's be honest: Blackall is a town of around 1,400 people on the banks of the Barcoo River, 960km west of Brisbane. It's not a resort destination, but it's got character and the essentials you need.
The Basics: You've got an IGA supermarket, Schluters Bakery, a few cafes including The Lodge on Hawthorn (historic Masonic temple with coffee shop and antique store), The Drawing Board, and Big Red Souvenir Shop & Cafe. For meals, there's The Woolshed Baa and Grill, the Barcoo Hotel, and the Union Hotel – proper outback pubs with decent food and cold beer. It's not fine dining, but it's genuine country hospitality.
What Makes Blackall Worth Visiting:
- The Historic Woolscour – Australia's last steam-operated wool washing plant (1908-1978). It's genuinely fascinating industrial heritage, with guided tours running hourly from 9am-4pm and the steam machinery operational May-August.
- The Blackall Aquatic Centre – Natural artesian spa waters at 36-40 degrees. After a long shift, this is perfect for unwinding. There's also a pool and massage spa.
- "Beyond the Black Stump" – The actual black stump that gave rise to the famous Aussie saying is here, used as a survey marker in the 1880s.
